KHMER OUTREACH, RETENTION, AND EDUCATION (KORE)
KORE (Khmer Outreach, Retention, & Education) was started by United Khmer Students of UCLA in 2003 to address the low rate of Khmer youth graduating from high school and the lacking numbers of the Khmer people in higher education. KORE’s Mentorship Program was established during the 2006-2007 school year and was also successful in educating and assisting Khmer youth towards higher education.
UKS mentors are paired with high school students from Long Beach during this year-long program (Millikan, Wilson, Poly, Cabrillo, Lakewood, Jordan). The program serves to assist both at-risk and excelling Khmer/minority students to not only graduate from high school but to consider higher education as a priority.
KORE’s College Tour is an annual event where high school students, both in KORE and outside of the program, are bused over to the UCLA campus where they meet and participate with UKS in workshops concerning basic college information.
KORE General Meetings are currently held Mondays, on odd weeks (Weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9), at 7pm-8pm in Ackerman Union Room 2408. To learn more or to join the program, please attend our KORE GMs, visit our KORE website, or email us.
